Playing Our Part – Our Corporate Responsibility Initiatives
Intu Properties plc, has a commitment to working with all parts of the local community in the areas where it has shopping centres, including intu Eldon Square. Our centres provide jobs for local people and act as core amenities for the communities they serve.
What we do
Across the country, in areas where our shopping centres are located, we run a varied programme of projects and campaigns to promote help for young people, prevention of anti-social behaviour and the benefits of vocational and other education initiatives, particularly in retail and construction skills. We work with national charities and local stakeholders to deliver these projects at a local level.
It is very important that young people are able to develop their skills, gain confidence and make the most of available opportunities. For very young people, we work with ICAN, a charity dedicated to identifying and helping those with communication difficulties from a young age. We also work with the Sea Cadets, a charity dedicated to teaching life skills along with some nautical training. We are particularly proud of the work that we do with Catch 22 (previously Rainer Crime Concern), a charity that works with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds on a programme based on social enterprise projects focusing on causes, effects of, and solutions to anti social behaviour. This project also directly helps young people engage with work and membership of wider society via our innovative Breakthrough Apprenticeships.
Our centres provide about 50,000 jobs across the country and retailers need skilled staff to work in their stores. We have created Retail Gold, working with local authority bodies, schools and colleges to provide a link between students studying for BTech/Diploma qualifications in retail and employers with whom they might wish to develop a career in the future.
